the other night i was playing with a few friends, and near the end of the game I didn't have enough for the blind (big blind) so what happens ? Do I leave or just go all in with a side pot.

Great question happman !

You would go "all-in" , with a short-blind. Basically there are a few situations when you can go "all-in" and this is one::

You are either the small or big blind. If you can't cover the blind, you have put all your chips in and declare All in. So both blinds (including your short-blind) and each of the called bets (but not including when someone raises) from the preflop go into this pot. This is your maximum potential winnings. All other bets, raises on the preflop more than the big blind, and each other round of bets will go into a side pot. So here you can potentially win the other blind, and the the big blinds posted by the other players. This is one of the few cases you can win more than you have put in.
if you were not one of the blinds, but you don't have as much chips compared to the raise/blind, then you will need to go all in or fold. This again would cause a pot split, the money you put in goes into the main pot, and after the subsequent players have matched your bet they additional chips will go into a side pot. The most you can win is the amount in the main pot. And 2nd place winner will win the sidepot.

Paul

I guess that kind of makes, maybe it was the beers and wine that effected our judgement that night.
